You know... I hate to say it but sometimes I really agree with you. I also dislike HOW the money is spent. I think there is massive waste in a wide variety of government programs and would appreciate the government evaluating programs on a cost effectiveness basis.

Sadly, this is not going to happen. The government will continue to throw money at bad policy because yes, the people demand it. The "what have you done for me lately" American mentality from both sides requires this money to be spent, whether it be on fences to keep you nanny-state supporters "secure" or whether it be on welfare programs which upgrade poverty living conditions to the level where violent crime rates decline.

And while I am also skeezed about the cash for clunkers subsidizing new car purchases and new car loans to buyers who maybe otherwise couldnt afford a new car, I'm not going to take my anger out on my peer group. There is no option that represents my interest, but I understand that throwing a temper tantrum isn't going to change that.

Well, I think that heaping mounds of criticism on any one person because of "their party" is b.s. I think there is room for improvement from both sides. I simply cannot see a difference between using my tax dollars for welfare and social programs and using my tax dollars for wars on drugs, terror, and iraq. I don't see a difference between the nanny entitlement state and the nanny security state. Both require huge government with massive taxes and deficits and wasteful spending and opportuity for corruption and loss of freedom. I don't think we're being "forced to be socialists" but I have had issues with the current and past Presidents, and how they spend my tax dollars (which I do contribute because I am not on welfare and I work in the private sector for a small business.) I think it's all too damn wasteful and authoritarian for me.
