Indeed. Sometimes first instinct is to go looking for some rationale and saving grace in what are simply stupid behaviours, bouldering notwithstanding.
A similar thing happened in reverse at an old spot, where a developer began painting names and pictures on problems. It seemed curious, but whatever. then a video of the area came out, and the dirtbags of easy grace at dr topo did some video magic to cover over the rock painting. It was like a soviet era airbrushing of history, with a blurry grey absence where you knew something was.
I wouldn't go handing out paintbrushes at the crags, though the font or eastern europe thing for signs on the rock is weirdly interesting. but busting kids for sidewalk chalk hopscotch routes is obsessive in all the wrong directions.
