actually, that's not true. the blackflies would make Hell worse. in fact... I can nearly guarantee that blackflies play a major role in Hell.

The mosquitoes would poke straight through a normal shirt and netting shirt/pants would get destroyed instantly from trashing through miles of dense spruce/fir regenerating clear cut and logging slash. I also doused myself in 100% deet. They still swarmed, landed, and infiltrated. Had to sleep under a bug net. Got fucking murdered.

Changed my life. It was one of those nightmare situations that was so horrible that everything else since seems like a fucking day at the spa even though life still sucks and you should all still die.

Fuck New England.

Wow, mosquitoes and black flies do have a use: keeping the fucktards out of here....

I have never been so close to tears in the woods as the time I first experienced black flies swarming in the Tetons. Fetal position, sad times. I could not get away until I scrambled up above the trees to find strong enough wind to get them away.

hands down the worst was building a tower on Grand Cayman. Sounds like a rad gig at first right? Killer accommodations and drinks and beach...fuck that, it was aweful.

We pull up to the site, its the highest point on the island and there is 3 foot of standing water for about 100yds in each direction and the engineer says we put the tower right smack dab in the middle. FUCK. During the days it hit high 90s and the humidity was insane, no bugs yet.

I was working with two guys from colorado, both got heat stroke first day and slowed us down. We wore knee high rubber boots to pull guy wires and set up the foundation. Heinous. Third day of stacking the tower I inspected an anchor and missed a mistake one of the hired laborers made, it cost us time and equipment to fix it and would keep us past dark, bossman was pissed.

As the sun set that day, the local hired workers all ran to their trucks and packed up for the day, us 'mericans decide to tough it out and fix my oversight. As soon as the sun set, it was ON. The mosquitos swarmed to us like white on rice. My arms looked hairy there were so many on me. My face, neck, down my back, arms, in my ears, mouth and on my eyelids...for 30 mins we battled them.

Got back to the hotel and we were covered in small bites. Heinous, the most heinous ever. Fuck swarms.

Turns out grand cayman is the most heinous of all for mosquitos, its where they developed these awesome things:

So... Basically... If you had done your fucking job properly you AND your coworkers could have avoided the heinous swarms of mosquitos and the resulting skin patina from thousands of vicious bites?

Wow. I bet you never heard the end of THAT one. I wouldn't have let that go for ten years at least.

I don't worry about biting flies... though it's like someone stabbed you with a thumbtack when you get bit. I sorta jump in a bath of deet before i enter. Ex-officio if you're in malaria zones.
