best beer in a can that i've found. has that honey and grapefruit smell you get when you pour a Pliney, pretty hoppy too. totally sessionable beer.

pmahnn - missed your thread in time for your whiskeyfail, but in case you're looking for more recs:

Aberlour
• 12 yr. <<< this is what I'm drinking right now
• 16 yr. <<< this is probably my favorite of them all

The Balvenie
• 12 yr. Doublewood

Bunnahabhain
• 12 yr.

Glenlivet
• 12 yr.
• 15 yr. French Oak Reserve <<< another favorite, actually prefer it to the XV

Glenmorangie
• Lasanta (tastes like caramel)

Oban
• 14 yr.

Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey

as for not liking American whiskey or bourbon, try Basil Hayden before you totally give up on it, or just save the bourbon for whiskey cocktails. I'm not a huge bourbon fan either, but my go-to warm weather drink is good lemonade, muddled mint, and Maker's. Delicious. Refreshing. Cheap.

looking at an empty of aberlour. opposite end of the spectrum from what i usually like, lagavullin. this is more like congac. how is the 16 year bottle compared to the 12? more sherry-flavour or what? please tempt me.

It feels like so long since I killed the 16 that I don't have a super clear memory of it. I've never had cognac, but it's way, way smoother, and a little ... smokier? I don't know enough about whiskey/scotch to talk about it very specifically, but darker in color and noticably better. (I'm articulate like that). Definitely try it, it's not *that* hard to find, and everyone I've ever poured it for loved it, raging scotch snobs included.

a lot seems to come from the cask with that whiskey. very floral smelling, oak you taste, an dthen yes a lot like a cognac finish. beautiful. smoky- interesting. i've got to try this. i think we just convinced me.

Ahem. Lizzen up, n00bs.

Laphroig 31 (pulled from the cask and bottled in 1974)
Macallan 25 (a perennial favorite, and affordable at $250.00 a bottle. Curt Shannon and I went through two of 'em on my one and only trip to Hueco in '06.)
Lagavulin 16 (as always. this is the scotch that ruined my life, btw)
Any Highland Park (but especially the 32 if you've got a few benjizs to drop)
Bowmore 30 (paid $30.00 for a dram in Canada a few years back. Well, quite a few years back. Time flys. The Angel's Share on this cask before bottling was extraordinary, and drove the final asking price through the roof)
Black Bowmore, 1964. (Too Spendy for words, but possibly the best dram available on the planet right now -- while it lasts. Not much left. Paid a months rent for a couple of drams in NYC a few years back. The crazy-assed-bitch was pissed.)
And for you working class types, Johnny Walker Blue. (Blended, not a single malt, but DAMN that shit is smooth. I'm no snob; I'll drink it if you're buying.

This thread is gonna get me killed.

I think I paid 15$ for a bottle of La Chouffe last night. A 6 of Golden Monkey that was 14$ when I moved here last year is now 20$. I have officially grown tired of the Main Line.

How people can be so proud to live in an area where they are blatantly ripped off on a daily basis is a phenomenon i will never fully understand.
