How is this any different doing it after the fact than it is if you were wiring the run during framing?

Aren't you able to just daisy chain the new outlet in?

Oh - wait, my guess is that to do so, you have to cut the existing wire and you won't have enough slack so you need to pig tail extensions. I AM NOT AN EXPERT, but I think any time you have connectiosn you ahve to have a junction box. I think that code requires this only to insure access, so a metal outlet box may be sufficeint.

Just my $.02

With complete ignorance of your local codes, and an incomplete understanding of exactly what you are doing, you may be alright by NEC to use an old work box (those blue plastic deals) if you are just interrupting a romex. You do still have to ground all your metal bits (fixture, t-stat, etc) and the outlet but a metal box may not be required.

If you are interrupting conduit, then you should prolly use a metal box to ensure the ground path stays good. Some EMT installations use the conduit as a ground return and just because there is a green wire doesn't mean that it's *the* ground. Of course this can be a J-box that feeds your old work box (outlet) as long as it is "accessible". NEC is a little vague on what constitutes "accessible".

Or you can avoid fires, lawsuits and death by just hiring a good electrician. You know.

What the others said. If you are cutting a length of Romex and it happens to run right through where you want the outlet, just plop an outlet box in line and pigtail it into the cut wire ends with wire nuts, all inside the box. If you want to run power to an area where you don't have a line already, run the romex to where you want to make the splice and put another box there to contain the splice (or run to an existing outlet box and use that).

Is that what you are asking?

I don't know electrical code, but in general all places wires join need to be contained in an electrical box, and all romex needs to be fastened to the wall/framing every two feet or so. If run on the exterior of the wall and not in the framing, use conduit.
