Photo Gear Help

Wife and I are off to Florence, Tuscany and Rome for a couple of weeks. This has inspired her to update and/or upgrade her gear and she needs help, so I turn to all of you smart fucks . . .

Still - she has a Cannon Digi-Rebel. Just serviced and cleaned. I am not buying her a new camera. But, she wants better glass. she doesn't want to lug around multiple lenses if it can be avoided (understanding that this means sacrificing some performce). Suggestions and reviews on reasonably priced glass?

Vid - nothing professional, just want something with image stabilization and hopefully not exceeding $500. I know nothing. What features are essential what do you recommend? at home we have blue ray on four 1080p sets so picture quality is definitely a priority.

Can you define "reasonably priced" in terms of dollars?

As for video, I've been looking into this myself. At this point, it's starting to become unnecessary to get a standalone video recorder. There are point and shoots that can handle HD video that also have IS. In the same package, they can also take some very good photos. It's certainly not DSLR, so you lose the speed of snapping shots. But for ease of transport and simplicity, it could be worth looking into.

Glass: Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. Maybe something wider as well, like the Sigma 10-20mm.

chuck the consumer slr and forget about investing in half-assed glass.

i see awesome pix all the time that were taken with pocket-sized point and shoot cameras. get one with a zoom that gets pretty wide. if it isn't just easy access - it's pain in the ass - and you'll miss the pix and/ or not even bother. also, adjustable settings and a good flash are handy.

otherwise you're babysitting expensive gear and lugging shit instead of enjoying your trip.

you'd have to pay me to take my gear on an airplane.

Unrelated but I'm lazy....

Is anyone making a ruggedized point and shoot in the mid-range MP now? All I'm finding is 10-12, I want 5-8. Do I need a time machine?

Or just get the 18-200 nikon lens. Cheap but effective all around lens.

Fairly certain no one is making cameras with such "small" resolutions. Although they should. But they don't. It's stupid.

No its not 2.8 but as he said in the OP he is willing to give up a little performance for a CHEAP all around lens.
And DM I dont think he would be the first to mount a nikon lens on a canon.
