Oprah Winfrey Network to investigate Zach Anner-Dr. Phyllis voting controversy

After various websites noted a curious surge in votes Tuesday for a contestant in Oprah Winfrey’s “Your OWN Show” contest, OWN, the television network Winfrey will launch in January, confirms to EW it is investigating. The online contest is really a search for contestants for an OWN reality series in which competitors will then vie for their own show on the network. Brewer said the motivation of "a lot" of the illegal immigrants is to enter the United States to look for work, but that drug rings press them into duty as drug "mules."

"I believe today, under the circumstances that we're facing, that the majority of the illegal trespassers that are coming into the state of Arizona are under the direction and control of organized drug cartels and they are bringing drugs in," Brewer said.
"There's strong information to us that they come as illegal people wanting to come to work. Then they are accosted and they become subjects of the drug cartel," she said.

Brewer's office later issued a statement in response to media reports of her comments. It said most human smuggling into Arizona is under the direction of drug cartels, which "are by definition smuggling drugs."

It takes someone of modest intellect to understand the difference between a drug smuggler (back and forth over the borders) and an illegal immigrant in this country working in the agriculture industry. This is true. The illegal immigration population in my Arizona county jail is 1%. The state average is 4 - 5%. Immigrants come here to work, work hard, and stay under the radar so they can send money home. Even the border violence crap is highly overrated, with politicians and the right-wing media using the killing of a rancher and a 2006 BLM closure as hyperbolic "proof" of a lawless, border war zone. The elected Republican Pinal County Sheriff has talked about how the border has been "taken over by Mexico" and supports John McCain's plan to spend a half-billion dollars further militarizing the border. But, the violent crime and murder rate in his county is down. Also, immigration numbers are down across the board, as the construction industry is in the dumps. The border problem you hear about is largely a McCain-Brewer re-election strategy that invovles freaking out about "illegal immigration" and then looking like they want to do something about it by spending up tax dollars.

Stupid bitches who are drunk on the kool-aid the GOP and Faux News are pouring love this made-up problem. The best is the political ad with Jan Brewer standing in front of a sign that the Bush administration erected, chiding Obama.

According to FBI stats, violent crime is down nationwide and down more in border states. If you could accept this, then we might have a reasonable discussion about how to reduce the economic imperative that brings people here. The Customs and Border Protection study, obtained by the Associated Press with a Freedom of Information Act request, shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, mostly when assailants threw rocks at them. That compares with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives.

In addition, violent attacks against agents declined in 2009 along most of the border for the first time in seven years. So far this year, assaults are slightly up, but data is incomplete.
