A Serious Idea About Bouldering

i like that idea.

especially if it was possible for the community to reach consensus on grades and approach it with respect and seriousness. As much as grading problems can pervert the focus of bouldering, for the person that is using a guidebook as a reference to plan ones activities for a days climbing - grades are a legitimate and integral piece of information. consensus grading might make the subject less of a joke.

i know there are a handful of us that think a website that functions as a guidebook to bouldering areas and is created like wikipedia would be something that would serve the climbing community well and that we would be psyched to contribute to.

hopefully this would all be done in good spirit. with the intention of sharing good things with likeminded people.

being first doesn't mean anything. It's the ascents done in good style that matter.

i see a future in which a gumby walks up to an obscure, suburban lawn sculpture somewhere and asks himself, "i wonder if this has ever been climbed before?

This is the bouldering equivilent of skateboarders glorifying the hell out of some anonymous 5 stair someplace, or a picnic table used for a grind rail.


Sorry 'portch, you need to work for fame and glory. You don't just get to "tag" it and claim it as yours. Get off the idea that you "own" anything, even your "first ascents".

seriously, i don't care, really -except as another local, who got the FA.

i mean, i kinda want to know if the lines that i did at the five mile the other day are established or not? (probably)

i want to know where all the quality problems that are within my limited interest (read: ability/strength) range are.

i know i'd be psyched to get the kind of moderate (read: gumby) tour that i have given out to a few others at joe's valley, or up in LCC - at somebody else's home location.

a bunch of the goods isn't even listed in the book.

everybody knows what it's like to see traveling climbers at your area flailing on problems that they have no buisness on just because it's got 4 stars in a book written by a minimum of authors. (especially when said problems are sandbagged) meanwhile, they are surrounded by fun problems that they are completely blind to because they don't know enough about the area.

all that does is make the classic 4 star problems that much more overworked, greasy and chalked up.

does it matter when one guy does all the cleaning work on a problem.

especially when the said problem requires rappeling, and landscaping.

then,

another party comes upon said boulder,

adds a landing to dial down the risk,

and sends before the guy that cleaned the problem does?

you should go to a place like North of Lake Superior, to see the billion square miles or so of boulders that no-one has or will ever climb once, much less twice. The mark you'd make is, like they say, pissing in the ocean.

Dude, There are so many boulders out there to climb coming along all the time, you don't have to worry about that, just climb, boulders will come.
