I had an interesting conversation with someone in a mild Healthcare Bill-induced rage this weekend.

I struggled for common ground and found this: we both recognize a need to diminish the number of selfish/apathetic/lazy/consuming people that have and will be produced. We both want awesome education by default. We both want people to live by default. He thinks future society should be like the 1920s...I think it should be like Star Trek. I can't remember if he said 1920s or 1930s...either way...I see problems.

There are social devices for cutting down on lazy assholes, but I don't think starvation has to be one. Education and community are powerful if they're going in the same direction.

I still think a lot of people just want a country of selfish assholes and think it will be best for the 'country' because keeping the US superpowerful and greedy will 'save the world'. Difficult to argue with because it's not a world or community I want.
