Bought a set of used track wheels and am in the process of cleaning em up. Used Hydrochloric acid to remove baked on brake dust deposits. Worked like a fucking charm. This is post acid post sanding pre paint.

That's pretty fucking rich for someone who purposely painted their wheels brake dust color! For the love of all things aesthetic please do not paint them that godawful color you currently are sporting. Blech, a crime upon wheels that is. You should know better.

If those wheels were used with metallic track pads you had better wear a respirator when mixing the dust with HCl. If you didnt your fucked, see you in hell.

Mintex are cool - great balance of nearly dustless and decent grip and wear.

Personally I prefer Porterfield.

I was planning on going with Hawk HP PLus as my next pad... Are the Porterfields a decent street pad? Dont mind dust, dont mind squeek don't want them to be so aggressive as to turn my rotors into super wear items... R4 or R4s?

What size rotors (front and back)?
What weight vehicle?
Do you soft brake a lot, hard brake a lot?

Stock rotors dont know the size off the top of my head. The porterfield pad would be the AP1182 for R4 for the fronts. Available in R4 or R4S. Vehicle weight = 3150 lbs give or take. I'm not familiar with your braking terms but I am hard on brakes and in general stomp the shit out of them at the last minute. I'm going with hard braking lol?

I'm probably go with R4S in that case.
They're probably going to be fine for you on the street.
If you have still have issues the answer would probably be upgrading the brakes, rotors and lines - not the pads (sorry).
If you had upgraded brakes, rotors and lines and were not getting the stopping power you desire or were getting fade then I might look at the R4 pads.

I run R4S pads on my street car and they're fine. A little dusty and they're definitely a little hard and squealy when they're cold. But they're fine for my uses.
I run R4 on the track car and they're amazing - but they wear pretty fast and are hard as fuck first thing. I probably wouldn't run them on the street but I drive pretty in control and mellow on the street.

I hardly ever have to deal with brake fade as I don't track my car like you do. The stock WRX 4 pots are PLENTY strong to pull the car down from speed. I had Cobb pads on there (rebranded ??type) which had great bite but tore up rotors. I got cryo rotors in the stock size to resist warping. I have goodridge braided lines and nice motul brake fluid. Pedal feel is very firm. I have been running ceramic pads which provide good overall stopping power but don't have the initial "bite" when you first get into the pedal. Interested in a balance of good wear characteristics and increased bite rather than fade resistance. I've driven on the Hawk pads and like em, again the HP Plus not the HP.

Gonna give stoptechs a try I think. Cheap. Dirt cheap. And good reviews. Porterfields will be tried at some point.
