Maybe worth it for the fuel efficiency/gas savings? I haven't done any math, but it gets filled so infrequently there exists a feeling that it could run forever.

While I know my honda 4t dirtbike is a gas sipper, it is doubtful you will realize significant cost savings in this area between two modern 4t outboards.

More likely, the honda motor run the exact same for 20 years with little maintenance, while the johnson will become increasingly tempramental.

I'm actually unfamiliar with modern johnson motors. We have an old 15(?)hp on the alumicraft and it died on me in the middle of a lake. Rowing sucks.

As for the Honda, after I think 8 years of good seasonal use, it's starting to show some age. No longer as whisper quiet (truly unreal how quiet it is new) as it once was, and sometimes it farts a little on the cold start. But still, a heck of a nice motor.

My family has two 1962 6-horse Mercury outboards, one of which we've been using since . . .1962.

My first motor--a 1968-ish 4-horse Johnson--still runs beautifully.


This is where I learned to drive them.
