"While many factors promote weight gain, soft drinks are the only food or beverage that has been shown to increase the risk of overweight and obesity, which, in turn, increase the risk of diabetes, stroke, and many other health problems," Michael Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which is pushing the idea, said in his testimony. "Soft drinks are nutritionally worthless…[and] are directly related to weight gain, partly because beverages are more conducive to weight gain than solid foods."

so you are willing to pay more because of the fat people and for the fat people?
tim, smart isn't one of your strong points. nor are wisdom and discernment.

Actually, it's YOUR health care system brought on by FDR.
Personally, I actually don't disagree with your assessment that taxes won't change behavior. I just think that those who drain the system most by their choices should pay the most. Thanks to Reagan (who is probably your hero despite his deficit spending and lack of leadership on key longterm issues), anyone who walks into an ER and ends up being diabetic MUST BE TREATED. If most of those people drink a shitload of soda for years and years and end up calling 911 as a result, why should I be forced (thanks, Republicans!) to pay?
wild beast wrote:the fact is, taxes do NOT change behaviors.

1 - I'm also not liberal,
You're probably also a fat little soda drinker who has a sweet cali government job and you don't want to pay for your own love of soda now when you can soak the taxpayers when you get kidney failure at 65.
3 - I'm not "wild beest"
4 - No one is arguing this. The point is that taxes cause specific user groups to pay for their impact.
