Was this from some sorta acute incident, or from a culmination of awkward leg motions causing chronic hip problems? My left hip is a little jacked from skiing, but it only pops out partway then re-inserts itself with shooting pain. It usually only happens when my legs are acting like Bilsteins maching ass over bad snow when my quads are on fire.
My knee detonation and resulting surgery took 2 years to feel strong enough to climb on. I still don't have the same flexion that I do with the other knee, but I know riding my bike in the hills of SF has helped it a lot. Strengthening the muscles around the area, increasing ROM, and reducing scar tissue seem to be the ticket for most things... this is after you've allowed the joint to heal properly. As for supplements, I used to take MSM, chondroitin and glucosamine, and noticed some level of lubrication, but no real acceleration of healing.
I had a friend with a hip problem associated with a backstep where several doctors couldn't diagnose the problem without "let's SEE wtf is wrong" surgery. Being a doctor herself, dismissed the others as douchebags and has since limited herself to lower impact activities for the most part.
