Get a point and shoot that takes HD video. Standalone video recorders are mostly dumb and the ones that aren't are well above $300. This opinion based solely on my Best Buy shopping experience.

i don't know from personal experience, but i know somebody that uses a FLIP HD mini camera mounted on a JOBY GORILLA mini tripod. his climbing vids look good on the intardweb to me.

Flip HD is horseshit and I regret buying one.

Reasons:
- Shitty optics
- When hand held, shakes like Michael J Fox is holding it while dancing the flamenco
- Weak focal length
- Limited amount of video recorded (oops, don't record too much video without the ability to offload!)
- No interchangeable battery (oops, you shot too much video and need to wait for it to charge)

I hate it much more than I like it.

I like the Flip for making crappy bouldering movies. It DOES have an interchangable battery (at least the kind I have does). For me, two hours of video sin;t really limiting. But your other complaints about the optics, zoom, etc are valid. But for $150-200, and just for playing around with, I like it.

For $200 you can get quality point and shoot that takes better video, has better optics, and all that other jazz. Werd!

And really an interchangeable battery? Which version do you have?

i hate video.

what am i gonna do?

spend my life taking video so i can watch what i shoulda been watching when it was happening later?

i do enough of that trying to get one frame.

i have a hard time doing it when i'm actually living the rest of my life.

buy post cards.

UltraHD. And the battery lasts a long time. I bought an extra battery, but have never really needed it while out shooting stuff.

That's cool. Looking at mine, I realize it's the MinoHD.

we "have" an ultra-ashtray as well, currently back at Flip whatever because it won't charge....HUNK OF SHIT DO NOT BUY ONE

it seems the choice right now for a lot of people shooting video is a digital slr with something else for audio- the zoom audio recorder is really nice.

I think that actually got decent reviews.

My crappy point and shoot took good video until it got soaked.

My phone takes alright video also.


Are you sure this is old school enough for you? A JVC camcorder with full size VHS tapes is way more legit.

I shot that crappy dabathon 2010 video on a Canon sx210is. Although it's a little slow; it has HD video and a nice zoom. Right around your price range and "hackable" if you want RAW etc.

Get a used canon vixia series HD video camera...throw on a Raynox WA lense and a longer lasting battery...done. You can do this for $300 easy.

I think the DSLRs that do video are still too expensive...especially when you can shoot through prime glass with a redrock or letus adapter for cheaper.

Why does a camera that records 1920x1080 require a 14.2MP sensor? Is it because they've included the ability to take JPEG stills? Does having 14.2MP and running some post-capture processing on each frame to the resulting 1080p size result in better quality?

But at $2000? Please. I'd rather buy a 5d Mark II.
