Obama to back Atlantic, Gulf drilling
President’s move aimed at reducing reliance on foreign oil

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama will announce plans Wednesday to allow oil and natural gas drilling off the Atlantic Coast and Gulf of Mexico, reversing a long-standing moratorium, according to administration officials.

Under the president’s proposal, the Department of the Interior will allow drilling 50 miles off the coast of Virginia and open up large swathes of the outer continental shelf in the south- and mid-Atlantic to oil exploration, officials told NBC News.

It would also potentially allow exploration in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, 125 miles off the coast of Florida, if Congress allows a moratorium to expire.

Obama's plan offers few concessions to environmentalists, who have been strident in their opposition to more oil platforms off the nation's shores.

other ways to frame this, instead of 'hypocrisy,' would be 'bipartisan' or 'practical.' And it's still not drilling in AWLR.

I voted for Obama because I thought he was capable of making tough, principled decisions instead of constantly making overtly political decisions (Bush II, Cheney, Romney in Middle East, Halliburton--> making $, no stem cell research, the best way to show you patriotism is to buy a lot of stuff you can't afford).

So far, he's doing a decent job of fulfilling my hope.

I thought the people against offshore drilling just didn't like oil in general...or they were against the idea that it was a universal energy solution. I'm still struggling to find the hypocrisy. Was it at a personal level or just a generalization from afar about these cockeatingshitsuckers?

I think it's impossible for a politician in the US to change their mind or admit they were wrong and not be accused of hypocrisy or "waffling."

IMHO this is due to decades of politicians making decisions for purely political reasons (in which case they are never "wrong" and any changes are due to changes in the political climate).

So having a politician who is actually trying to govern - and is trying to actually make decisions based upon best interests and facts rather than polls and emotions and lower brain-stem impulses - confuses many Americans.

Blaming the politician who is, however, trying to do what politicians SHOULD do rather than the hundreds of politicians who are NOT (and HAVE not) served in our best interests and done the right thing is stupid and self-destructive.
