got diagnosed (need decrepit elderly input)

got diagnosed (need decrepit elderly input)

Postby zirc » Thu Aug 20, 2009 1:27 pm

with arthritis in both hips today. been dealing with left hip pain/reduced mobility for a while, the ortho showed me bone spurs that looked like 1/4" big in both hips. they say i'm way too young to have this, but i do.

anyone else ever dealt with this? or had replacement. there's a new surgery being done, metal on metal hip resurfacing,

http://www.hss.edu/conditions_hip-resur ... view.asp#1

but i ain't doing that shiz til i'm 50 at the earliest, high cobalt and chromium levels in your body can't be good.

dr suggested yoga and gave me a Voltaren script...

I suggest a few rounds of bridge, a tall glass of metamucil, and an 8:30 bedtime.

That sucks.
I feel your pain - literally.
Agree 100% on waiting as long as possible.
Stretching a lot seems to help some. Ice after exercise helps - as does heat the day after.
Weather is a factor for sure (cold and humid sucks ass; big fronts moving through is a drag).
I've been trying to cut down hard on the anti-inflamatories and pain drugs. They were causing stomach issues. I'm going for minimum dose and instead of "feel no pain" going for "pain I can still live with and function with".
End of the day - just got to live with it.

Criz - the long and short of it is it SUCKS - once the spurs are growing and you cart. is disintigratign you are fucked. I agree, do not get the replacement yet unless absolutely necessary. I don't say this because the surgeryis so painful or risky or even because it limits your post-op lifestyle - it really doesn't, you could still go Bugs Bunny for Ivan any time you want. The problem is if you get it now, it will never last and you will most certainly have to have it done a second time and that is where the trouble really starts.

Metal on metal is old technology - the most advanced hip replacements are metal encased in ceramic. resultign in ceramic on ceramic - the friction is far less than metal on metal and therefore the lfie expectancy is much greater - very slight risk of squeaking (1/10,000).

Yoga, PT, ICE and Ibuprofen.

bummer. sorry.

I'd definitely look into yoga. I would think it would help you compensate with everyday things and climbing allowing you to put off getting the surgery.

PM me if you want some yogs recommendations. I know some instructors in the NYC area and maybe they'd have some recommendations for a good studio in your area.

If there is bone spur tearing the SHIT out of cartilage, how does engaging in activities (yoga) that make that joint move around help things? I interpret that as stabbing something, then twisting the knife around a bunch for extra measure.

I don't know anything about bone spurs.

That sucks Criz. Wait as long as possible for surgery just so the technology can improve during that time.

Really though, u need to move to the health country of the desert southwest where you can tool around in a wheelchair and campus everything. That should eliminate the majority of problems. TB is coming back as well so u can be on the cutting edge and be the first to start a sanitorium.

Hope you feel alright in the short run.

I've got some old-guy advice:

When you find yourself at the mower shop buying the third lawnmower of your lifetime so far, this is NOT a good time to assess the value of your existence on earth.

criz, that is too bad. hearing that kind of news is very disheartening. is this congenital? here, let me explain: does anyone in your family have hip issues?

start googling around (duh). find out who is doing what for this. i can't believe spurs would be cause for replacement. but if there is degeneration of bone in the area, yeah, it'd need replacement.

the most promising thing could be PT / yoga type shit.

hopefully obama's free medical for everyone will start and he'll have a 1 year "hip replacements for everyone". 'cuz anyone whose brained isn't clogged with shit will know that if you are over a certain age - even if you've been paying into the shit eater pyramid scam / ponzi scheme your ENTIRE LIFE - you will not qualify for hip replacement surgery. you will be deemed too old and out of your productive years. cheap pain meds, some counseling, etc.

good luck man. let us know. my shoulder? glad you asked. was doing amazing well. so much so i decided to go DH at Mammoth last month. well yeah. that didn't work out so well. so i consider it a big question mark. fuck me.
