Gas just doesn't have that nice "cooked over a fire outside" kind of flavor. I doubt I will ever give up my kettle grill. Although I would love to have a Green Egg I will likely never pay yuppie prices for that utensil. If one ever comes up used on Clist though...

I want a good smoker, just not for a grand.

I'd like to do ribs, brisket, salmon, beef jerky, turkey, etc.

I'm debating about getting an oil drum with a separated fire box a la the classic design. Dunno though.

Might have to buy a welder and make my own.

Something like this:

Holy SHIT. It's $1099 for the ranch style Weber, and there is no hotbox for indirect heat. You could buy an XL Egg and all accessories for that price.

well if you're going all "ranch style" the green egg prolly comes off a bit metrosexual. green ceramic vs. black steel.

personally, i'm man enough! i'd rather have an XL green egg @ $900.

two 20# turkeys?! ftw?

you'll prolly spend $800 trying to make an oil drum rig in time and effort.

hmmmmmmmm......i think i'm gonna roast a chicken on my webber today.

slim, something like this might be do-able if you want to make something for cheap.

At retail, it's worth every dollar. Although I suppose I'm biased, indoctrinated by my pappy. I've just never disliked anything about them. I need better action shots of this thing.

How well do the webers hold temp? Can you set it and forget it (fu ronco!) for the twelve hours? A buddy has a weber similar to the one you posted and it seems okay for smoking/bbqing. But you can't do any actual grilling on them, right?

I too have been toying with the desire to build a smoker. Here's another non sequitur's awesome, egg inspired build:

If I were to spend a grand though, I'd consider this:

That Karabaque looks very well designed. I think I'd have to consider one of those for a grand.

correct, you cant set it and forget it like the green egg, them bishes are badass. that weber smokey mountain is, from what i gather, basically a really really nice cheap smoker...for $350 its still on the low end.

weber owns my soul. just put the pork butt on, 12 hours oooooooooh babeh.

i think the coolest would be if you found an old bomb casing and fab'd one up out of that...haha.

I just found this link and I am very pleased. I think I may buy one for my existing weber.

I am buying one of those. What a perfect little design. I'm sure with a little experimentation you could get that thing to go for 12 hours.
