Maybe because many of the American Belgian style beers are both better and more creative than the ones coming out of Belgium? Cheaper too. But then I guess you don't get to act like a pompous ass about it.
Find me an American Tripel better than Westmalle; an American Pale Abbey better than Orval or La Chouffe; an American Dubbel better than Westvleteren 8; an American Gueuze better than Drie Fountainen.
Find me an American "belgian style" more creative (and still good tasting) than the Houblon IPA Tripel or the Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor or the Fantôme Fleur De Bomal or Brise-BonBons or the DeuS or the De Struise Dirty Horse.
Find me ANY truly good American Lambics.
Cheaper - yes.
Otherwise, American "belgian style" beers are just starting to catch up. With the exception of a few breweries and styles (sour beers and Russian River for example), there is just NO comparing. Doesn't mean it's always gonna be this way - but for now... it's like drinking Canadian Whiskey and claiming it's "better and more creative" than Single Malt Scotch.
