A four-year-old boy survived a whole night after his left arm was ripped off by a broken washing machine.
The youngster and his brother (11) had snuck into the kitchen at night.
A police spokesman said, “The washing machine was standing there without a door. When the kids turned on the machine, the arm was ripped off...”
The older boy put the arm into the freezer and took his brother to bed.
Nine hours later, their mother discovered the severely-injured child.
An orthopaedic surgeon said: “He probably didn’t bleed to death because he slept on the stump, putting pressure on the wound.”
The extreme shock of what happened also helped to suppress the pain.
Why the boys were able to turn on a washing machine which had no door remains unclear.
