the real breaking point and kind of revelatory moment i've found comes not so much from jumping into the cold water, but rather how one reacts to it. the revelation is a kind of calmness washing over you. the first exhalation is important. from there, it' s a neat feeling to listen to your heartbeat underwater. this may sound very loud and demanding. then it slows and becomes more assertive, less mouse like, as if you can hear the actual flow of blood underwater. after settling into this slowing rhythm, the moment of getting out of the water seems like an afterthought, an incidental gesture, a casual kind of standing up again. i feel like one of those new born gazelles in a mutual of omaha wild kingdom, taking a first step on a savanna. focus on how warm the blood is inside your body. then stumble stumble stumble try to stand up like a seal with stupid flippers.
