Whiteflash wrote:Well, she was in tears all match day for doing this to me. So she wasn't exactly syked to be moving to Chicago either, minus the program being excellent. We played no games with programs and this was our fourth choice, though when you are only applying to top programs anything can happen. Colorado was next on the list, so close. Residency is four years and I already have a solemn blood swear that we WILL BE MOVING TO ROCK NEXT. This was one of two cities on the list I didn't want to move to, oh well. Just going to demand 2-3 real climbing trips per year and get syked on 5 hours of driving, how are the cops in Illinois. Oh, and another bullshit thing I CAN'T HAVE MY FUCKING GUN IN CHICAGO WTF?!

The whole match process is so screwy. I got (sorta) lucky and my wife matched in Tucson. Which, after 5 years in St Louis, was a huge relief. Most of the places on her list were cool with me, but there was always a small chance we could have ended up staying in the midwest. <SHUDDER>

The cops in Southern Illinois are bad, especially holiday weekends. The climbing areas are semi-close to a couple lakes, so the highway patrol is always out trying to bust folks coming to and from the lake. The big problem with being a weekend warrior in the midwest is the weather is always so damn iffy. You have a weekend trip planned, psyched to get on REAL ROCK, then watch the weekend weather forecast slowly get worse and worse. When conditions are prime on that sandstone, there are few places with better rock. Those conditions are elusive and fleeting. Good ;uck man.

You'll have vivid dreams of pulling on your projects, getting farther, and farther and SENDING! Then the bonk on the head will wake you and you'll realize you were just dreaming...

In lieu of divorce there is another option. DON"T FUCKING MOVE THERE!

She is the one who put Chicago on her list of "programs good enough for me" and forced the situation. Find a job that can be done from various locales around the country and spend the next four years living it up and climbing. You are going to be having between four and six kids, and your wife will be hellaciously busy working which means very little freedom for Irish to go on boldering trips. So do yourself a favor and get your kicks in now. You're stronger than you've ever been, and it's a perfect time for you to spend a few seasons split between Hueco and Yosemite etc... Let your wife deal with the frigid weather and gale force winds. Send her a puffy jacket for Christmas while you climb in shorts in Hueco.

You will thank me later.

Not sure people base life decisions solely on climbing, but I'm sure climbing is part of the decision for a lot of people. I would not want to take a job, even if for 4 years, near somewhere without climbing because life is a balance and climbing is part of that balance.

Yea, figured our future financial stability was more important than my hobby. As far as divorce, I quit my PhD program 4 years in right before we settled on our list a month ago, that's the damn thing about actually enjoying life with your wife. Currently studying for the Serious 7, that should be interesting coming from a bench scientist! Slim, Heuco has already been promised to me every year. I have carte blanche to take as many climbing trips a year as we can afford.

i started climbing in a gym in ohio 20 years ago. 4 hours or so to nearest climbing and still had a blast. in fact, i think i climbed more in ohio than i do now that i live in boulder...but that's in part cause i can't stand to go climbing with a bunch of obsessive spraytards who schedule their every waking moment around climbing -- sucks the fun right out of it.
